The issue of homelessness in our community has reached a critical point, with the number of homeless individuals rising from 110 in 2021 to approximately 590 in 2023 and encampments tripling within a year. This surge has exposed vulnerable individuals to extreme weather conditions and severe health risks, with over 59% experiencing chronic homelessness and struggling with complex health and mental challenges. My platform offers a comprehensive approach to ending chronic homelessness by integrating housing solutions with essential support services to address immediate and long-term needs. I’ll advocate for these policies.
- Housing First Approach: Prioritize providing permanent housing as a base for individuals to stabilize before addressing other issues like mental health or employment.
- Comprehensive Support Services: Pair housing with essential services such as mental health care, addiction treatment, and poverty reduction programs to create sustainable, long-term solutions.
- Re-zoning for Shelters: Ensure that shelters are located appropriately across the city with access to essential services.
- Domestic Violence Support: Provide targeted services for victims of domestic violence, including access to shelters and counselling.
- Substance Abuse Treatment: Expand access to addiction treatment and rehabilitation programs to help individuals regain stability.
